Creativity

Creativity comes in all different forms. You could write lyrics, make music, write novels, etc. New media gives people the chance to share that creativity with others across the globe. It also challenges them to think of things that have never been done before in order to get a proper following.

Take for example, Youtubers. They blog their everyday lives and post it for others to enjoy. Through the likes and comments they receive on their videos, Youtubers are able to measure how well that video did. They use the feedback that they get from their audience to see what kind of videos they should post next. If their video did really well they might continue to post videos similar to that, but if it did poorly, they might rethink their approach in new creative ways in order to keep their audience entertained. In a world where everyone is doing the same thing (working, going to school, etc.) Youtubers want to stand out. There are lots of people who want to make their lives on youtube their full time job and in order to do that they need to be interesting enough to gain a huge following. But as we have already seen, things change a lot so in order to keep their following they need to change with the times and find new ways of keeping their audience's attention which in turn fosters creativity.

Youtube has also become the home of a lot of musicians and for those inspiring to become part of the music industry. Popular artist post their music on Youtube and other music sites to give their listeners the chance to hear and/or purchase their music from different platforms. But youtube isn't just about singing. There are lots of people involved in music that post videos about things such as, creating mashups of two or more songs. In the article 1+1+1=1 The new math of mashups by Sasha Frere-Jones it states that "In October of 2001, a d.j. named Roy Kerr, calling himself the Freelance Hellraiser, sent Temple-Morris a mashup called “A Stroke of Genius,” laying Christina Aguilera’s vocal from “Genie in a Bottle,” a lubricious pop song, over the music from the Strokes’ ”Hard to Explain,” a brittle, honking guitar song." Due to new media and technology, Roy Kerr was able to take something and transform it into something new. He gave these two songs a completely new feel to them by combining them with one another. It's almost like turning the ordinary into the extraordinary and that wouldn't have been possible without new media providing him with tools needed to expand his creativity and truly think outside of the box.

People are even creating mash up videos of Disney characters "singing" along to songs like "Crank That (Soulja Boy)." In the article Disney Tolerates a Rap Parody of Its Critters. But Why? by Brooks Barnes, "Anthony Falzone, a copyright expert at Stanford, said, “media companies have been fairly tolerant of Internet mash-ups and parodies so far..."" Even though Disney is very strict when it comes to who uses their material and for what purpose, it seems as though they don't see mash up videos as a a violation of copyright. While people using new media have to be careful of copyright, they can explore new types of creative outlets and post them from others to see. People who use new media are always looking for new things to try. Just like in the case of creating mash up songs or creating a mash up of Disney characters in a video that make it look like they're singing along to the song. People want to post things that are not only creative but that are memorable in one way or another and because of that want, creativity grows.

Social Networking: Effects of Social Media on our Business and Personal Lives

Quarantine was an unexpected twist in all of our lives. We walked into this year thinking that it would be something amazing, but it was the complete opposite. COVID took a lot away from us including most of our face to face contact with one another. During these times we are looking for any form of contact that we may possibly have and social media is one form of communication that we resort to when we can't (or don't want to) see each other face to face. People have used social media for different reasons throughout the years; to talk to friends and family that live a distance away, online dating, etc.. There are things that are normally done face to face that we now have to try and digitally do due to the pandemic. I want to explore the positive and negative influences that social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn etc.) has had on social networking in both the business world (job interviews, networking events, etc.) and our personal lives. Now more than ever we c...

Creativity and New Media

I have always been drawn to photography, music, lyrics, poetry, fiction writing, etc. All these things have helped me to express myself in ways that I never would have imagined possible. Especially in times where things weren't always the best, I turned to creative ways to say what I wanted to say without actually saying a word to anyone in specific. I know it's not healthy to keep emotions bottled up inside so some new media forms have given me a way to actually say things and feel like someone might be listening even if no one actually is. I haven't been really active on my social media platforms lately due to work and school, but for this assignment I chose to post one of my photos captioned with some of the lyrics that I wrote on Instagram. The picture below is of myself taking a picture while I look outside into the rain. I really enjoy this picture and I'm extremely proud of it because it looks surrealistic and really captured how I was feeling in the moment. I ca...

Blog about Twitter

In my personal opinion, a Twitter discussion allows people to be themselves more than a Blackboard Discussion does. I feel like what I'm saying sounds a lot more like me when I'm posting on Twitter. On Blackboard I feel like I have to be 100% professional. When someone shares something funny I can't respond with acronyms like 'lol' and I can't include emojis. I personally use emojis to show the faces that I might be making when they can't see me. I feel like emojis adds a lot to the conversation because when you can't see or hear a person, the meaning behind the message can get lost. Emojis give me another way to communicate any meaning lost that might have occurred without them.  In-class discussions, however, allow us to see nonverbal signals that people give us so emojis aren't needed. For example, if we see people nodding their heads along with our comment then we know that we're probably on the right track. If people are giving us weird look...
